I've had a Firefly banjolele for a while now, I love it's plinky-plunky banjo sound. It came with D'Addario Nyltech strings, when one broke I put on their Pro arte Clear Nylon strings.
I prefer fluorocarbons for my other ukes because of their softer feel on both fretting & strumming fingers.

So here's the questions: if I put "good" strings on a Firefly, will I lose the awful-yet-essential plinky-plunky banjo sound? Anyone else put fluorocarbons on their banjolele & like/not like the sound?

One friend has Living Waters on hers and another has Aquilas, both sound like...a banjolele!

I put Worth Browns on my Firefly to tone down the brash Aquilas. I have Martin flouros on my Waverly Street Banjolele. Like them both.

I have Aquila standard Nylgut on mine.

Just to make a point. Aquila strings are good strings. Just not my first choice for my other ukes but they are just right for my banjo uke.

A big fan of Aquila banjo uke strings as recommended by Goldtone, which are very, very close to their concert strings.

Aquila NylGuts on mine. i tend to play the banjolele with the same "enthusiasm" as I do my steel-stringed tenor banjo. As a result, i need strings than can endure.

I restored a La Pacific banjolele and put Aquila red strings on it. Really great banjo plunky sound.
