Is it possible to buy a single wound low g, and anyone have any recommended sources? I've found some single unwound low gs, like the Aquila red, but not wound. Thanks! :) (for tenor)

Any string that is the 4th/D for a classical guitar you can easily get as a single (and more than likely is the exact same string as one packaged especially for ukulele).

Oasis has a smooth wound low G that got a lot of buzz at NAMM, that I believe is available as a single as well.

You can buy single low G Savarez strings from stringsbymail.com. They make two wound strings for the ukulele, the Corum and the Cantiga. They are polished and thus are "low squeak". I use them both and like them a lot

Ditto, those are the ones I like, the Cantiga in particular.

I don't see on the stringsbymail web site any way to buy single strings or single ukulele strings. The only Savarez strings I see there are a high G set.

I also use the Fremont Soloist. I found that it performs very well compared to other low g wound and unwound strings on my uke. I had problems with the Worth Low G string being very boomy on my Pono MTD. I could play it very lightly but it was still not a pleasant sound. I tried Kololau Gold wound which was a little better and then the Fremont unwound low G. The Fremont unwound low G sill had some of the problems with sounding boomy. On the other hand, the Fremont Soloist blends nicely with the other strings and does not make much noise.

I agree with Jim. The squeakless Fremont Soloist is my favorite too.

Also available at HMS.

I have never bought the Corum on its own. The Cantiga is here: https://www.stringsbymail.com/savarez-cantiga-polished-normal-tension-4th-d-single-8222.html
The Corum comes included inside the Craig Bandau custom set so it is a better option financially: https://www.stringsbymail.com/custo...t-11355.html?zenid=oqnf4ao53ebad11mq1kpt7c4o7

I strongly recommend this one. I use it on both of my tenors. It was recommended for my Kawika tenor by the luthier, and I've never had any problems with them, or with buying off this web site. For the other three strings, I use Savarez Alliance standard tension.

I like Fremont Soloist, but I prefer South Coast ML-SW 4th string and Thomastik-Infeld CF30 flatwound.

Thank you to all for all your generous advice! I have so much to learn, and this forum is so great for that. I tried low g for the first time last week, at first I was really put off, but it grew on me fast. I'm sure my perceptions will continue to develop and change; it is interesting to explore all these (for me) new strings.
