Carl Jones: Guitar
http://www.chestnutcreekarts.org/register/?regevent_action=register&event_id=921

Carl's guitar class will explore a few ideas that can give your guitar playing a boost and make it more fun to boot. Playing with a flatpick and fingerpicking both will be discussed, incorporating some basic music theory to raise your comfort zone on the entire fingerboard. Being able to utilize harmonized scales, partial chords, and just knowing the distance between the notes of a chord gives more variety to what the guitarist can offer. These simple concepts are easy to use and sound great. Fingerpicks and thumbpicks are all welcome; Carl uses just his fingers and occasionally a thumbpick when he really wants to accent the bass.

For fiddle tune back up, Carl strives to enhance what the fiddle is doing and not overplay or get “in the way”. Mainly, he hopes to inspire you and encourage you to appreciate and enjoy the guitar’s possibilities. Bring your guitar, a recording device, and a flatpick, fingerpicks are optional.

Erynn Marshall: Old-Time Fiddle
http://www.chestnutcreekarts.org/register/?regevent_action=register&event_id=919
The fiddle class is for intermediate-advanced players who wish to explore a variety of archaic fiddle styles from the Virginias, Kentucky and North Carolina. Erynn will delve into left hand ornamentation, blue notes, alternate tunings and the intricacies of bowing (rocks, pulses and dwells) and other nuances typical of traditional southern fiddling. She will also explore secrets to great tone and playing with ease. Recording devices are recommended. Fiddlers should be comfortable playing by ear, have good facility on their instrument and an appreciation for beautiful, old tunes.
