What is the standard way to number strings? I am doing a beginner flyer.

G = 4 C = 3 E= 2 A = 1

Is that what most folks use?

I think that's pretty standard (at least here in the U.S.) - that's how I learned, and that's how ukulele strings are numbered when you open a new packet of strings. In other words - the string closest to your face as you look down while playing is is the 4th, the string closest to the ground is the first. That's the standard way to number guitar strings (http://www.cuug.ab.ca/~lukivr/String.html) as well.
