can't get a good idea from pics, they seem to be on the heavy side. ?

I think you should be specific on which kala.
I don't think they're all quite the same.
But generally, they tend to be on the thinner side in the ones I've played.

My Kala tenor archtop has a very slim neck. My Kala soprano (KA-15S) and pocket ukes have slightly chunkier necks, but not terribly so.
