View Full Version : FS: Redwood /Ziricote Maccaferri Style Tenor by Luis Feu de Mesquita : Amigo XVIII

04-03-2015, 07:14 AM
As most of you may know, Luis Feu de Mesquita, ( LFdM ), is an exceptional custom luthier from Ontario Canada. Luis’ tenor ukuleles are among the best sounding and looking ukuleles available. Based on the Maccaferri guitars, these Maccaferri style ukuleles are designed and constructed by Luis with passion, pride, and precision. Luis builds his Maccaferri tenor ukuleles with rare “lattice” bracing. Luis is a perfectionist with a background as an engineer, and it shows in the beauty and quality of his instruments. His modern style of lattice bracing is known for strong projection and volume. No detail is too small for Luis to address; even the fret ends are rounded in to spheres and highly polished.

This tenor delivers on the sound and beauty you expect from one of Luis’ instruments. His design and construction creates a very responsive, and thin top. The lattice bracing keeps the top and the bridge together, very flat. This causes the entire soundboard to be pumped and move together from the edges. This has been thought to improve sustain, overtones, and volume.

Specifications and special features of this tenor:

Built in early 2013, Amigo XVIII (I am the first owner).
Highly Figured Ziricote Back & Sides
Beautiful striped Sinker Redwood top, this sinker redwood is over 100 years old with excellent tone
Curly maple binding on the front and back
Ebony fretboard with Curly maple binding
Cutaway design
Slotted headstock with light weight Gotoh Tuning Keys
Spanish Cedar Neck
Bone Nut/Saddle
Gotoh Tuning Keys
17″ scale and are 1-7/16" at the nut.
Lattice bracing for strong project and resonance
Gloss finish
Currently strung with Oasis Bright Strings, Low G
Includes perfectly fitting Ko'olau hard case and a humidifier.

In near perfect condition, only 1 tiny (nearly unnoticeable) light mark below the bridge from restringing. Otherwise, it is as new. Luis ukes are nearly impossible to find, and he has a very limited production with a fairly long wait list. This uke is sold with a perfectly fitting Oahu case and humidifier.

Why on earth would I want to sell this? (1) I’m looking to downsize my uke collection, (2) I prefer a thinner neck. (3) I recently received my 4th sinker redwood tenor. I will probably regret selling this tenor. But here it is.

Current Sound sample with Oasis Bright Strings, Low G

If I did not have one on order I would buy this. This is an outstanding instrument at a great price, probably close to $2400 brand new. Luis is not really taking any more orders, mine was ordered back in Aug. 2014 and due for completion Dec 2015. Someone will be extremely lucky to be able to buy an LfdM, especially one like this at that price.

What did you like about it?

Hi sam13, Well, the woods are gorgeous, the workmanship is excellent, it plays great, and the intonation was really good. Great tone too. And a cutaway. What's not to like? I just bought 2 ukuleles recently, or I would buy this one. I want to get an LfDM, but can't buy any more right now.

Andy, your collection is getting very impressive. Hope you win the LFdM. I have heard some great things about them.
If I hadn't committed to a new Beau Hannam I'd be very interested in this one myself.
