OK, this is a uke site, I know...and I am a uker. But I played a Venezuelan Cuatro on the weekend - my brother has just been playing in Chile and brought it back with him. Wow! Four strings, similar tuning to the uke, but with a low string both sides of the fretboard. Great sound.
When I got home, I put a low G string on my Pono tenor instead of the A and tweaked it up to low A to give low G, C, E low A tuning. This certainly pushes out more bass oomph to accompany ukes in ensemble playing and sounds quite balanced to me. I'm gonna play with this more...or just get a Cuatro and tune it the same. I don't have a bari to try it on.
Am I mad? Interfering with the natural order of things?? We'll see....
