View Full Version : Ukulele JJ's Birthday Challenge!

Ukulele JJ
03-11-2009, 12:33 PM
Today is my birthday. Yahoo! :nana:

Anyway, I thought I'd celebrate by (among other things) throwing down a challenge to the UU community. Here's the deal:

Go to this site (http://www.joshhosler.biz/NumberOneInhistory/selectMonth.htm), or this site (http://www.everyhit.com/dates/), or any other similar site you find, and figure out what the number one song was on the day you were born.

The first link is to the US charts and the second to the UK charts, but you don't necessarily have to use the chart of your own country.
If your date of birth is earlier than these lists go, then--and only then--you can pick another year, such as your 16th birthday.

Do a ukulele cover of that song.
Post the link to it here in this thread.

That's it! No fancy prizes, because this challenge has no end date. And yes, you might get stuck with a song you hate, or that you can't find the chords for, or that doesn't fit the ukulele at all, etc. But hey, that's why it's a challenge. :D

I've set up a YouTube playlist (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=B232612FB451AA39) of all the responses I'm aware of. I'll try to keep it updated.

And no, I haven't done one myself yet. I'll be a bit busy today. But I'll get to it eventually...

Good luck!

JJ

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(This was, for a few months, an actual contest. The winners are here (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showpost.php?p=176717&postcount=113). The rules are preserved below, for historical purposes...)

Grand prize: In honor of my recent over-the-hill-ness, a $40 Amazon.com gift card, so you can buy yourself a birthday present!

Second prize: $20 Amazon gift card.

Third prize: $10 Amazon gift card.

(Those outside the US may opt for an equivalent amount on Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, Amazon.co.jp, or Amazon.ca, assuming I can figure out the website.)

Deadline: July 11, 2009, 11:59PM CDT.

Criteria: Entries will be judged on, um... basically how much I like 'em. :D I'm mostly concerned with the musical content, and what you do with the song that fate has given you. Talent is nice, but so is musical creativity, enthusiasm, etc. Fancy video hijinks will neither help nor harm your chances.

Old Video Policy: Fine by me! If you've already done a video of the song that was #1 on your birthday, I'm certainly not going to make you record it again. (Although you can if you want.) Likewise, if your video is new, there's no need to say anything specific at the beginning of your video to prove that it's new. (I never like doing that myself, to be honest.)

Whining Policy: Not allowed. Never heard of your song? Go find it. No clue how to play it? Figure it out. Think the song is too stupid for you to do? Get back to me when you've checked out all the entries to Deach's "Mmm-Bop" contest.

Honor System: Yes, I'm trusting you to use your real birthday, and not just say you born on such-and-such instead, because you like that song better. Seriously, that would very uncool.

Good luck!

This sounds like a fun challenge. My birthday is Sunday and it is a big birthday that I am not sure I'll survive. Perhaps it is fitting that my song is I will survive. I've been playing for only 4 weeks and that song has way more than 2 chords in it. I've also never made a youtube video before. Perhaps it is a daring way to start a new decade.

UH OH, I just realized that I have to look up the GDR charts! but there are none! How should I join this contest when the state I was born in didn't have charts? at least none you could find on the www... plus you won't find any chords for those songs... I think I'll stick wit the PSB

Cool idea, but since I'm older than dirt, I don't even recognize the choices from the day I was born.

The coolest one I found was for my 28th birthday.... The Theme from M*A*S*H* (Suicide is Painless). If I wasn't just a beginner I'd attempt it. I've only had my uke since January....

Maybe someday.

Hey, that's a cool song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOjA2eais54)! I think we had the 45 when I was kid.

(And it's a simple "Bo Diddly" strum over common, open chords. It's practically made for the uke!)

The original Laura Branigan version is a bit better, if that helps any.

If there's one thing the MMMBop contest has taught us, it's that there are ways to make a song better. Or at least different in an interesting way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDSKssyCc1c). :p

I got different results... I'm not sure which I'd rather ruin (I don't see myself doing a great version of either)

One is "Hello" by Lionel Ritche, and the other is "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins.

Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies covered "Hello," maybe I could ape that... Not very creative, but it would be fun.

Ok. Its uploaded and processing as I type.
On the US charts, for me it would have been "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys. I may get around to that one as well, but I rather liked the UK number one single for that auspicious day: "It's Over" by Roy Orbison (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te_4Dzu7aKA&fmt=18). The original version of the song has a relentless dirge like beat.. DOOM da da DOOM da da DOOM... which I really liked. Later versions kind of smoothed it out with more strings and horns. Timing was fun too. This tune appears to be a bit crooked, or in one of those odd 5/ or 7/beats per measure time signatures, where the the measure ends and the next chord begins a beat before you expect it to. The Yoppettes join in to fill out the sound with their dodgy backup. Listen for the soprano's over the top high note at the end. I am not one to go to far with costumes, but the shades seemed a fitting homage to the man.

July 2, 1964: "It's Over" - Roy Orbison #1 in UK, #9 in USA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te_4Dzu7aKA&fmt=18)

Arrghh! I'm totally hosed on this contest.

The US number one song for 25 April 1972 was "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack.

The UK #1 was "Amazing Grace" by The Pipes & Drums & Military Band of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards

Drat! No way I could do those justice. Good luck to everyone else.

Change it up...give it a rock/reggae/punk/whatever feel. Rewrite the last verse to twist it into a bitter breakup song instead of a love song. Have fun with it!

Wow, what a nice idea! I've just checked the top singles on April 2nd 1974 in the USA, GB and Germany and I think I will cover them all...

Germany: Dan the Banjo Man (an instrumental by Phil Cordell)
GB: Seasons In The Sun (Terry Jacks)
USA: Hooked on a feeling (Blue Swede)

It's good that this challenge has no deadline... that gives me enough time to practice. :)

Oh... and I've just checked my dad's birthdate US no. 1 hit... hilarious... It has to be covered, too!! Here it is:

Mine would be "It's all in the Game" by Tommy Edwards. Or "Stupid Cupid" was the UK hit by Connie Francis. Tough choice there. I have noticed that "It's all in the Game" has been revived many time over the years and has an interesting wikipedia entry (only number one hit to have music written by a vice president of the USA). So, I might give this a try.

I really like the idea of this contest, but how am I as newbie ukulelist supposed to do this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1X6qXkLjYE)? The rhythm might be doable, but the vocals.. haha (that's the UK one btw). Ah well, I guess i'll just give it a try or I'll do the Milli Vanilli one (US Chart) :P.

Should have been born 1 year earlier, then I could have done "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin, that would have been awesome :D

O.K.

I am new to the room and admittedly am better at building these than playing them but I am practicing my birthday song and working on mustering up the courage to post a vid.

My US billboard song is Windy by The Association. Just a little to "Gidget" sounding so that is a no go. Luckily the UK song for my birthday is All You Need Is Love by the Fab Four. Please no one take this song if you can find it in your heart to refrain, as I am certainly doomed if a decent player performs this one as well.

Thanks for the help on this guys.

I checked out the tutorial on all you need is love. I already worked out my own version of this song and it is just a wee bit different, and by a 'wee bit' I mean it is quite a bit different, so I'm gonna stick to it because I just practiced it for about an hour. But thanks for the tutorial link. After I finish mastering my rendition I will go back and learn the right way.

I would, I'm really into cheesy 80s synthpop! :nana:

Hey, that's a cool song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOjA2eais54)! I think we had the 45 when I was kid.

(And it's a simple "Bo Diddly" strum over common, open chords. It's practically made for the uke!)

'Take on Me' was covered by Ukebucket for the 'All things Reggae' contest- and its one of the best covers ever- check it out ! :)

For those who didn't catch it: A very close inspection of my remark will show that I was being more than a little facetious. :biglaugh:

OK, here are a couple of verses of my birthday song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VhLxggNDdM) - keep it short. UK number one in September 1968: Mary Hopkins, Those Were The Days - quite lucky really! I've played it in a different key to the original, which was just too complicated on the uke (for me at least).

Do however much you like.

(Bear in mind, however, that you will be competing with people who did do the whole song.)

Great, do i pick the UK number 1, which is No Limit by 2unlimited (possibly the worst song ever), or the Aladdin Theme, which was no. 1 in america...

Nice, we both got songs from some great movie soundtracks. Although I won't be able to do anything as fancy as I have seen on Youtube, but I will do my best (once my ukulele is fixed)

Let me just say that I don't know how some of you contest-holders do it. I had only 14 entries, and three prizes to give away, and even then it was tough to narrow it down. I can't imagine trying to pick just one winner out of a big ol' pile of submissions. Whew! Anyway...

Ladies and gentlemen, we have the winners!

First place goes to MonMon87 for I've Had the Time of My Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyqu97Rcun0). Great singing and great strumming. What more do you need? :shaka:

Second place goes to WS64 for his instrumental version of A Hard Day's Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoXuOKIWmCA). I was reluctant to pick an instrumental at first (although I never said you had to sing), but this was just really, really good. :worship:

And third place goes to... Well, it's a tie! I'm adding an additional third-place prize so that I can give one to FiPfft's Nothing Compares 2 U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R06aF_yl4TM) and one to Yopparai's It's Over (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te_4Dzu7aKA&fmt=18). Both approached their respective songs with the necessary emotional abandon, and that made me happy. :D

If the winners will PM me with their e-mail address and I'll arrange for an "e-gift-certificate" to be send along. (If you happen to live in a non-Amazon country, well, I guess we'll just have to figure out an appropriate alternate.)

Thanks to everyone who entered!
