I ordered a Toby Chennell (Jazzboxukes.com) baritone a year ago. As he was starting to make it he found a set of sides that matched the back better so he used them instead. At the same time he used the old set to make a uke bass. He offered the bass to me at a great price so I just couldn't refuse. They get sent tomorrow and trustfully will be here in time for our last Uke group get together of the summer happening this coming Saturday.

I'm getting really excited to finally having two true archtops. I'm naming them after my grand nephews who trustfully will be playing them for their grandkids someday. They're the third generation of pickers so will have many fine instruments to pick from after we old foggies are gone. Right now they are 20mos and 4 yrs old and already sitting in the jam sessions.

Chennell uke bass cutaway : carved Cedar arched top, maple sides with carved back, rosewood fretboard with passive pickup.

Chennell Baritone cutaway: Carved spruce top, maple sides with carved maple back, thin fast low actioned maple neck with a slight radius to the ebony fretboard, adjustable ebony bridge, purfling around entire body, neck and headstock with burled walnut veneer headplate and burled walnut pickguard.

He only had Martin strings for the bari so will be changing them with Southcoast HL-SW's.

I tell my wife that I swear this will be the last one... well until ....

I will not be envious, I will not be envious, I will not.............oh hell, I'm envious. :iwant: Gorgeous. Congratulations.

Incredible looking instruments Patrick. What Phil said. :)

What Phil and Jon said to the power of 10. :cool:Patrick........you were holding back on me......never said anything about the bass.SWEET mother of all uke basses. Those pictures look fabulous and maple looks even better in real life. I image you won't be sleeping real well until you have them in your hands, very exciting

Hubba, hubba! I shall revisit this after Hive next year.

One of the most gorgeous ukulele basses I've seen, if not the most beautiful. Happy for you!

Congratulations, what a pair! Looking forward to a more detailed review and/or a sound sample, as I am waiting for my own Jazz Box Tenor to be finished sometime later this year.

Thank you everyone. This forum is so special to me. I never thought I would say I have good friends I've never met but man, this forum sure dispels that notion.

The uke bass was a last minute decision.; literally. He mentioned he was building it with the sides he decided to change on mine. I said I may be interested and it just went from there.

The baritone is named after my grand nephew, Mica Patrick, 20 mos old. He has some health issues and has already gone thru two heart surgeries with the last being he had a stroke during surgery. He had some repercussions as a result but they are working to maximize his potential. Trustfully he'll play it for his grandkids and if not his mother will have it to hear his voice everytime she plays. I felt since the two instruments were born together, like brothers it was only natural to keep them together. Hence, the bass is named after his big brother Xander. I can visualize the two of them playing together in their sixties and seventies; much like my brothers and I do now. Toby has a daughter Micas age and recently lost his brother so he really took the project to heart. It sounds like it was very cathartic for him. He was a wonderful luthier to work with.

I would like to get up a few slideshows made on the two instruments but not sure how to do it. Is it best to sign up for Utube and post them there or what? I'll check out the forum on how to do that.

Here's a bass he just finished.
