Here's 4 tenors that I kept in B tuning, my killer B's. Not every uke sounds good in B tuning but these do. Some low setups will buzz in lower tuning, these don't. While I'm not convinced these recording capture all the sound I hear, it's the best I've got (Blue Yeti + Audacity). Thought it would be interesting to compare the sound of these ukes too. Each has its own unique rich and complex sound. They are all linearly tuned. I wonder how they would sound reentrant? To my ears the subtleties of the different woods and designs can be heard in these samples.

The 4 tenors are:
  1. Grimes Quilted maple with Oasis trebles and wound strings (from Hilo set) on the 3 & 4. I originally thought the black nylon Hilo strings that it came with sounded pretty good, but these are Oasis are better.

  2. Beau Hannam sinker redwood and BRW with Oasis Brights. This uke is a hair bit heavier than the other 3. But that adds to a rich, warm sound. Responds well and can be driven hard.

  3. Kinnard all mahogany with Oasis Brights.

  4. MyaMoe myrtle with Worth CTs and a wound D'addario for wound 4th.

This is a terrific comparison, Hodge. I can hear differences and think your baseline setup is just fine. The playing is very clean and helps the comparison nicely. I have to say this makes me consider Oasis linear strings more strongly. As much as I like the SC smooth wound linears I have, I'm intrigued with the Oasis possibility.

Thanks Craig. To me most fluorocarbon strings sound similar. The Oasis seem to have a good range on a tenor. I've got the same Oasis Brights on a Wise tenor in B-flat. Here's its sound sampling for comparison. This is the only uke I have in B-flat tuning.

What's the wound 4th you have on the kinnard and beau?

After listening to all of them I think I prefer the Kinnard the best. Thank heavens since I own one. :p

For my sound preference, I'd go with Kinnard, Beau Hannam, Grimes then Mya Moe.

Thanks for doing this. Great playing!

Very enjoyable and informative as always Hodge, great job. Thanks so much for the effort it takes to do something like this, your contributions are substantial.

The different sounds are very evident and that Grimes defies all logic, being complete maple it still has warmth and depth. Guess that Steve guy knows what he is doing ;)

This is like a sound museum! Fine instruments on display, for your ears. I really like the B tuning on these tenors. They sound wonderful. The one that appealed to me most is the Kinnard. I'm a fan of mahogany when it's done right, like this. They all have individual greatness to them though. Thank you Hodge.

Another fun Hodge Comparo. I really enjoyed it.

I haven't yet experimented with B tuning but may have to give it a try. I have the Oasis Brights with W4 on my Hive Hornet spruce/maple and I must say they sound amazing. I did buy a set of Southcoast with wound 3&4 to try next, but I'm in no rush to change the Oasis strings out.

Thank you for the rare opportunity to listen and see these master crafted instruments. I could never rank them, I would want them all. That's not too UAS is it?
