Amazing stuff! That little wing cover is something else bro! It makes me miss the "ukulele-to-pedal" days hahahah. Nice jam!

Thank you for sharing that. Good job playing and also to the friend who helped with the camera work

Thanks!

Thanks! Glad you guys liked the vids. Yeah, I've got a bunch of pedals, I should post a pic of my pedalboard :) Also if anyone wants advice on what pedals to get for the uke let me know (blasphemy to some but music to my ears) I've tried a bunch of pedals over the years. Some things like the Wah you have to mod to get the right sound too. Change the sweep capacitor to a lower value and you're all good.

SWEEET! they all rock.. (I like BDLM blues) awesome job, killer solos man!

Thanks!

Thanks for the high praise everyone! Much Mahalos. Yeah, I know Mark! Really, really nice guy. He mentioned you too. Have you advertised your shirts on UU? Also, I'd be interested in buying shirts from you. Do you have a website or catalog? Thanks for the myspace request too.

Hi, I was trying to spy the vid close up.. but not too sure, kinda dumb question.. but are you using a pick or fingerstyle? or both? thanks Joel

jus fingers

I just use my fingers. I keep my nails about classical guitarist legnth (just peeking above the finger tip. My index finger I keep slightly longer. Sometimes I do straight fingerpicking, other times I use my index nail like a flat pick. I took a semester of classical guitar and picked up some nail care advice from my teacher Lynn McGrath. She said to file your nails at a 45degree angle (always only in 1 direction) this helps to keep the attacking plane of all your nails consistent and even to even out your tone. Also, for the best results get a metal file or a crystal file (its kinda pricey 12bucks for a crystal file but it has a lifetime warranty) Hope this helps!

Thanks! thats some good info.. I always do my nails in a completely random fashion, but I'll start take it more seriously and do it a bit more consistant like you described, (even 45 deg, in 1 direction). Your tone is very nice. thanks!

Nail Care

Yeah, a consistent nail shape helps even out your tone. Those classical guitar doctorate students really know their nails! I found out though that my ring finger nail is shaped weird (like a V). Its has almost a bend in the middle so it forms a peak. This makes my ring finger attack more prominent than the other fingers, luckily, I use so much compression and distortion that it evens out the tone :p So long story short, nail care can only go so far if you've got deformed nails :)

Those are some of the best ukulele videos on youtube that I have seen lately.

I agree with everyone else that the Hendrix is cool, but I really like your original stuff. You play mean and got a good voice for singing. Very sick playing.

re: your tone.... I always hated the whole plugged in ukulele sound, but I think your sound changed my opinion.

Your uke actually sounds good distorted. Most electric ukuleles have that quacky piezo pickup tone, but your set-up works really good.

What other mods have you had to make to your pedals/set-up to get that sound?

when you get a chance, will you post a pic of your pedal board and some info on them!

that would be grand!

The biggest thing that will help your sound and to get rid of the Piezo "quack" is a good DI box. The box I use came highly recommended by Jake. http://leonaudio.com.au/active.htm (link to DI box)
Unfortunately the box is made in Australia and shipping is pretty expensive. Not only that but the box itself is pretty pricey. You'll be looking at spending around 400bucks. (I had to sell a whole bunch of gear to afford it :p) I didn't really know what it would do for my set up, since Jake plays the uke unadultered these days and I have a bunch of effects. What I found was that it did wonders for my tone. There is way more clarity with the distortion, and less of the "quacking-out" that you hear a lot with ukes played with distortion at the end of notes. The sustain was improved also. There are some other secrets that I'll get to later, but the thing that got my tone the closest to what I hear in my head is the Leon Audio active DI.
