Only familiar with their all laminate models. Generally a lighter construction than many in their price range, they also sound a little fuller and more resonant and have used a bone nut and saddle even on their cheapest uke. Not familiar with the TKU-24. Could be good for that price. I'm not crazy about the sealed gear tuners, including the ones on my Pono concert.
Personally for that money I'd try to find a Kala cedar top tenor. More bang for the buck. Makai is a good cheap ukulele, a beginners uke, but you can get better sound for $300.
