modding 5-8 string ukes?

I see numerous nice 5-8 string ukes that usually go for less $ than their 4 string counterparts.
Can you just leave the extra strings off, even take off the extra tuners and be done with it, or extra modding need to be done?

You can do it, but the spacing on the strings won't be same like a typical 4-string uke. If you can live with that, I'm sure you will adjust to the placement of the strings from either a 6 or 8 string uke.
