Guess What?? We're giving away a brand new Concert Mainland Ukulele (http://shop.mainlandukuleles.com/product.sc?categoryId=3&productId=9)!

To enter to win it, post a video of yourself playing a reggae song on your ukulele in THIS thread.

Your video can be a cover of a reggae song, an original reggae song, a reggae song in a different style of music, a non-reggae song in a reggae style - as long as it's on a uke and reggae-related, anything goes!

Mike of Mainland Ukes will be judging this one, so be yourself and do your best!

Post up to 3 entries per user (including collabs, if any)
Deadline is April 30th, 2009.

Can't wait to see those awesome reggae videos! Good luck!

 unfortunately, my knowledge of reggae songs is very little.
So I will probably be butchering up a classic like red red wine...
Is that a problem? :o

do the entries have to be new ones or can they be from previously uploaded videos?

I'd say that entering an old video isn't against the rules, but it didn't take alot of effort either.
I think making a new vid specifically for the contest has merit.

Videos can be collabs with other instruments as long as a uke is involved.

Capt. Google, record just the audio and then piece together a slide show on the computer. At least then you'll have your hat in the ring... :)

I don't have a good microphone, either. The one on my laptop sucks. Also, with the Mainland banjo uke coming soon, it'll be a while before I do.

Don't mind me, I'm just complaining...

That makes things a bit easier for me, if ska counts. Is it alright if it's a more punk-influenced ska (like the Aquabats)?

loosely translated -

You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Oh yeah
And they're gone so fast, yeah
Oh
So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Tell me who will still care
Can you tell me who will still care?
Oh care

Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du
Yeah

I spent my evening listening to random reggae selections, looking for a song to cover, and trying to get the rhythm in my head. I didn't find a song that felt right, but I did get something stuck in my head.

So I wrote an original white boy reggae tune, relevant to our shared interest.

LOL. Please delete the forum. My boss and my family will appreciate it.

I begin to grasp what you mean. I better don't count the hours I've already spent reading posts here since I've registered. I've also ordered a UU shirt. I'm turning into a ukeholic and forum addict! S**t! My gf complains that I'm only talking about ukuleles day & night and she told me that she doesn't think ukuleles are sexy. HOW WRONG!!! Well... I guess this kind of talk doesn't belong in the Contest Thread. Why not open a "ukeholism" thread?

This is my first entry.

The Equals were a sixties, self-conciously mixed race band featuring the fantastic Eddie Grant (who later went on to do Living On The Front Line and Electic Avenue)

Though not a Reggae song, it always seemed to be quite a Ska influenced tune so I took away all the Beat trappings and Ska'd it up a bit.

Here it is, Baby Come Back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jhx8A6VEZ9w)

Secondly, and please take this as constructive criticizm, as much as I enjoyed your video, I found myself wishing through the whole thing that I could see your hands. We're all interested in ukulele, and some of us are still trying to learn to play....so seeing your hands as you play in a video is a big plus.

As far as I know, no one's attempted any dub yet. So for my second entry, here's my stab at a dub classic, Augustus Pablo's "Java." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_lTUoROhcQ)

Thanks! I guess if you wanted to do dub correctly you would need to start by multi-tracking, but I found the one-man band approach quite fun. And knowing I can just bust out a bad-ass riddim on any street corner gives me a lot of satisfaction.

Okay....I'm clueless....What's "dub"???

To paraphrase Louis Armstrong, if you have to ask, you'll never know. :D

It's not that esoteric, though. It started as stripping existing reggae tracks of most or all of their vocals. Producers added delay and reverb to the remaining instrumental tracks, and the sound of dub was born. Some, such as Augustus Pablo with his melodica, added additional melodic elements on top of the existing instruments.

As you can imagine, none of this lends itself very easily to live* solo acoustic performance.

*live in the sense of doing it in one continuous take, not necessarily in front of an audience.

Man.. dubbing live is probably the best ever though! I engineered for a couple of really sick reggae bands on Kauai, HI (Rootz Rockahz, Top Notch, Revival: check out their myspaces) and they always left me room in some songs to dub them out... I could dub their whole show if they wanted to! haha

Well, here's my video!

I made a bit of a frantic bish of it to be honest, not only did I think this would be a brilliant song to do after I'd spent a good few hours in a pub's beer garden only for it to turn out to be a bit on the high side for my voice, I then spent a happy morning making the song and forgetting it was a video competition! So the video and the song where done separately, which I realise may well be against the rules, so my apologies in advance.

Anyway as I had much fun making it I figured I'd put it up here anyway, and if I get some more time before the 30th I'll do another. Yay!

Oh one final thing, youtube seems to have made it very quiet, so headphones seem to work best.

Other than all that it's just fine ;)

I loved this one!! Great idea to change up the strum pattern on the chorus....very entertaining (and it had nothing to do with the sunglasses).

Thanks Mailman! :shaka:

so this is my first try at recording myself, first try on vocals, first try competing with the uke, and first try at a cover.

My soprano is too small! send me a bigger uke!
