I’ve hosted the Top 50 Ukulele Sites for the past 10 years or so, but no longer have a need to do so. For those not familiar with the Top 50, it is a place where websites can join up for free and have a description of what they do and get ranked by their popularity (UU is currently #3). As host there are marketing advantages for your product. Every time someone clicks on any Top 50 button, it directs a visitor to your page and you get more traffic and better rankings on search engines. There are currently 200 sites on the list with buttons on multiple pages linking back to the host.
I could just stop hosting and the list would no longer be available, but aside from the host’s advantages, it is a great resource for ukulele enthusiasts. On the server side you have to meet some requirements that you may not currently have. The current list requires 17GB bandwidth/month and 6.5GB of disc space. I have a dedicated server with four websites on it that I share with my wife and the Top 50 puts it a little bit over the top, so that’s why I want to pare down.
So if anyone is interested in taking over, it can be kept alive. The process would involve downloading and installing a script on your website (it can be found here: http://www.aardvarktopsitesphp.com/). I would then send you the Top 50 images for placement in the script and notify the members of the host change when everything is set to go. They would have to join again and overwrite the code in their website. You can use the email form on my website (http://hoffmannlutherie.com/) to write if you are interested.
