Hi all -

I've been working my way through the Alfred uke series (Beginning, Intermediate and now Mastering), along with various fingerstyle pieces. I'm wondering what book/online resources others have successfully used and enjoyed to deepen/expand their learning?

(FWIW I'm more interested in fingerstyle but want to build up my strumming technique as well.)

TIA,
Lesley

Get the Real Book (fake book) and start doing your own arrangements. Take the arrangements and work on doing chord substitutions. Instead of a G chord, adding a GM6 and Gmin7, etc

I see you play guitar. If you want to develop your fingerstyle playing, I suggest studying classical guitar. I added classical guitar to my learning which has increased my ukulele playing.

Also, the classical guitar will give great dexterity in you left hand and right hand. The longer stretches are no longer difficult on the uke or electric guitars. Also, you get to the point of anchoring different fingers and playing bass lines and melodies together. Playing classical guitar has done wonders for my tone and technique on the ukulele and electric guitar.

I just started exploring chordal scales. It's for Jazz guitar but you just apply the ideas to ukulele. In fact I find the ukulele a good instrument for working out ideas with music. I'm using this book by Carol Kaye http://www.carolkaye.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=57 . The exercises in the book can be used with ukulele. Some of the notes will be too low but you adjust and don't play them.

This book is excellent http://www.amazon.com/Mel-Bay-Understanding-Ukulele-Chords/dp/0786672153 You may already know some of the things in this book. There is a wealth of material in this short book. If you digest everything in this book, you'll be on your way to a thorough understanding of the instrument.
