A few years ago I posted this same thing and fell into one of my most prized ukuleles. Just before my daughter was born (she's now 3) I asked looking for a uke to pass down to her and found a great one that she can play with as she gets older without worry. Well, we are expecting a second baby next year and thought I'd start the search. Please let me know if there's another gem out there!

Which scale (presuming a Soprano) were you interested in? And what amount did you consider "cheap"' i.e. $50/under, $75/under, $100/under, etc..???

All scales and I would need to stay under $200. Lower the better though. Don't mind fixing something up.

Dolphin. You can do what you want with it and not worry. I have mine, scratches and all, in a case that cost more than twice what the uke cost. It sounds and plays great. My two granddaughters have one each also.

Look at the Caramel ukes on Amazon. They are selling sopraninos for under $50 and they sound pretty good. I bought a butterfly one of my granddaughter and refinished it because it had a very light finish. I used sparkle paint on the vine and butterfly in green and gold and put a few coats of poly on it looks very nice now. She was just turning 3 so it fits her hands now. I also bought a concert in the same pattern for my daughter and refinished it as well. It was a horrid orange color. Some poly and sparkle paint made the two of them alike. Later I saw a zebra wood sopranino for $30 and bought it for myself. after changing the strings to fremonts, it sounds very nice and will probably go to my granddaughter after I have no more use for it.

For inexpensive Ukes the Caramels (previously Rubin) are pretty good. My Uke shop that set them up seemed to think they were equal/better to low range Kalas. I have zebra wood tenor and concert Caramels and get a lot of joy out of them.

I have an Ohana spruce top that cost three times the Caramel and while it is lighter and louder, is not as mellow as my zebra woods. I end up playing the zebra concert most days.

Being a noob and on a slim income keeps me from Pono or K's.

Under $200 gives you many options, but you don't need to spend that much to get a worthy uke for your daughter to play and grow into. I also would say the most important aspect is getting decent uke with that is set-up *properly*. For $79.99 delivered, I think these would be great for your children to start with and still be very worthy to play when they get older: The Ohana Pineapple or Standard 10 series that you can buy from MIM's where she checks and adjusts the set-up. Here are the links to each to purchase:

I was at a garage sale and picked up four banjo ukuleles that need a bit of work. If you are interested, I'll get more into detail. They are 25.oo each. I am in Salem, Oregon

If he's not interested I am.

I will take them out of the drawer tomorrow and see if I can get pictures from my phone to the computer. They are all old style soprano ukes. It is an open offer.
