Can anybody please advise on purchasing nut files IN THE UK.

I have searched this forum, but can’t find much suitable guidance.

Im looking for suitable nut files, and fretting/crowning tools.

Happy to purchase used if anyone has some to sell?

Ebay? It can be a bit hit or miss, but wayy cheaper than any specialist 'luthier shops'.
 
Thanks for ideas. I have searched this (and other)building forums and got a bit closer.
eBay has proved unsuccessful, the're only listing luthier shop items, at a higher price.

I checked out the recommended sites that Pete has suggested.
I can't help but be reluctant to spend £65.00 on 3 nut files, but recognise that it may be the only choice for quality kit.
Now it's deciding what 'sizes' I need.
A potenial option is Crimson guitars, they make great looking stuff, including nut 'blades' at a very reasonable price.

Any one used these? / recommend sizes etc?
 
I bought a 32 TPI hacksaw blade...chopped it up into 4 pieces ..
The blade thickness is just right for the C string, so I left that bit as it was, and put the other three bits tho the thickness sander and ground them down to size. ..I have used this set for the last five years.

I saw this through my search, they look great.
Unfortunately, the £600 sander doesn't make this option viable (yet!)

Could make me a set could you??? :eek:

all you need is a flat piece of material with 100 grit abrasive glued to it and you use it to sand the blade to size...when the set of the teeth are flat with the blade, it's ok for the A string.
 
I've not felt justified buying proper nut files yet, so far I've got by with a set of welding nozzle file/cleaners. If you're not familiar with them google around and you'll see they're less than a fiver. I start off using a fine jewellers saw to cut the slot part way, then finish off with a suitable size nozzle file.
 
I've even heard of the odd maker using a triangular needle file. At first I thought it rather odd but one of the guys who used it was quite obviously a very fine maker. I tried it on a scrap piece of bone and looked at the resulting slot through a loupe. Of course it results in a rounded bottom V slot and for the thin strings you couldn't call it a V slot at all. I don't use a triangular needle file but I've no doubt that it works. With a bit of practice I'm sure it can be made to work extremely well. It's worth getting a good quality file. Something like a Grobet.
