Hi,

I want to upgrade from the fun little makala I have for something with a little more quality.

I'm stuck between these two tenors

kala-st (specifically the gloss stg)
https://vimeo.com/68261892

and the kala tenor travel Uke ka-sstu-t

https://vimeo.com/117248993

The portability of the thin line one isn't a concern its more its unique tone

which would give the best quality sound ?

doesn't seem to be many comparisons between the regular and thinline kala tenors- i've gathered the thin line is loud.

(any body with hands on experience would be great :)

thanks a lot

Jonathan

My opinion is only based on the two sound clips that you linked, but I think the Kala-ST sounds way better.

It really depends what you like in terms of sound. Put on a nice pair of headphones and do some blind tests. It helps to take notes on what qualities you prefer, like warmth, resonance, punch, clarity, etc. I find myself wavering between the two, but would personally opt for the thinline to add variety to my quiver.

Tough choice - they are both nice - and great demo by Corey Fugimoto. At first I thought the STTU but on second listen I liked the ST. Let us know what you decide :)

I think the Thinline is great, but I have to go with the Kala KA-STG. I have heard and played them and they are tough to beat in their price range.

Hey,

Thanks a lot guys,
I think I'm going to go for the STG, theres a little more depth to the sound which should sound nice when playing it at lower volumes. Though the slim line is very sharp it seems for picking.

quick question.
their are two retailers selling it the same price, i can't seem to get hold of them to ask.

on one site it comes up at kala ST and on the other STG.

I understand that when kala updated their ST ukes (the newer ones supposedly sounding better) they renamed it the STG to differentiate from the satin version .

I'm not sure when they did this however, is it likely one on the above site is selling the older version or its likely just to be a typo? (i'd obviously like the newer model.

Also do kalas come with carry cases as sold?

Thanks so much for your help

Jonathan

If i was you I would get it from here as they are just a uke shop and they will check it over before they send it out.

Reading through the description I find "accent the high gloss finish" so I'd guess it's just a typo (or rather unupdated database)

Well, at least the one from Allegromusic comes with a "free carry case" - whatever that means. Some Kalas come with gigbags, but I guess that depends a bit on the vendor.
If I were you I would expect some basic protection from it and prepare myself to buy a softcase or better gigbag one day.

i would get it from the ukulele site only its sold out.
I thought that when i saw the gloss, though the old was gloss too. they changed the 'bracing inside the ukuele ( which improves the sound apparently) otherwise its identical i think

I tried the SSTU and found it a little head heavy and unbalanced to play. I'd say the STG...
