Sweep picking?

wouldnt it be kinda hard if you didn't use a pick though?
i guess you could put an individual finger on each string to do the same
it woulod be sick if someone did it though

sometimes when i pick, i kind hold my index finger as if it were a pick. i can pick up or down when i do this, using my nail, but i get a better feel of the strings than i would with a pick. this is one way it could be done.

hahaha temporary fix... fake nails and superglue. just make sure you dont get any air bubbles under the nail because it can turn into nail fungus. and to remove the nails, soak um in acetone. its much better that way than ripping off the top layer of your nail as you pry the acrylics off. hahaha.

Jake S does it on some stuff but he is using a low g making it more linear, thus more doable. I can do it on the 1st 3 strings (re-entrant) but it adds a lot with that extra low g.

Tim, somewhere along the line you got some bad information. Jake never uses a low G. He is a believer that the high G re-entrant tuning is what gives the ukulele that special sound.

does heee? havent seen him sweep pick before. have you got clips? do share :p

Grappler, Jake uses sweep picking on the studio cut for 3rd Stream and he did the sweep picking during the solo when he played it live on the Conan O`brien show. I don't recall off hand any particular YT videos that would show him using this technique. I believe he also uses sweeping in Wes on 4. Again, not sure if there is a video out there or not.

Aldrine uses sweep picking every now and then.

Oops! My bad. Here's what made me think that. And probably also because I can't get notes as low as his. (He play tenor?)

At around :40 seconds... but now watching it again I see my error. When he hits the top string to start the run the sound is higher. Well, being new to the ukulele and totally enamored with re-entrant tuning, this makes me really happy.

Thanks for the correction!

Code:
You can play a quick arpeggio of notes by using this pattern (in 6/8 time.)
This is a D minor chord in root position. (I play this with my left-hand thumb
up over the fretboard; is that so wrong?)

You can use this fingering pattern on any chord, but to my ear, it sounds best
on chords that don't have unison notes.

||-------5-----||---
||---1-------1-||---
||-2-----------||-2-
||-----2---2---||---

I like to use first finger-2nd finger-thumb-3rd finger, but you can use
whatever fingering is most comfortable. If you can really get it under your
fingers so you can play it fast and smooth it sounds great. (I memorized
this pattern myself while laying on the couch and watching TV, actually.)

Any ukulele player would benefit from knowing this pattern in my opinion.
Even if you're a strummer and don't usually do any fingerpicking, you can
still throw in a bar of this pattern for a quick fill.

Here's something further to play after that first D minor arpeggio:
 Dm            Dm7            Dm6 (or Bbmaj7) A7
|-------5-----|-------3-------|-------1-----|-0--------
|---1-------1-|---1--------1--|---1-------1-|-0--------
|-2-----------|-2-------------|-2-----------|-1--------
|-----2---2---|-----2----2----|-----2---2---|-0--------

This may not be the same thing as "sweep picking" as played on the guitar,
but it seems like the most efficient way to play a smooth arpeggio on the ukulele.
