Piezo disc pickup squeals and sounds tinny

I Just tested a new twin disc pickup I got on ebay for internal installation. I temporarily taped them to the top of my uke near the bridge. All I get is squeals and at best, an echo-like, tinny sound. What am I doing wrong? Is it the pickup? Won't work without a pre-amp?

You definitely need a preamp. I'n not sure what else could be at fault but hook up a preamp and test that before coming to a conclusion.

Yup, that did it. Thanks again. Easier to dial in my Crate practice amp than my G-Dec 30. Cord way too long. Now I have to decide whether to bundle it up and stick to the inside, or cut shorter and re-solder.
