I've stopped playing soprano ukes, and here's a little midcentury gem from my collection. This mahogany pineapple was built by Aria, the well-known guitar maker in Japan. It bears the company's earlier name, "Arai," which was its founder's name.

This is a scarce little collectible. Although I've owned many solid-wood Japanese-made sopranos such as Keiki Kamaka, Aloha Royal, Yamaha and Maxitone, all of them were figure-eight shape. I just haven't seen that many pineapples.

And this one is a player! It has great volume, a full voice, low action. It's all original with no cracks, just a few dings. The tuners are original. One of them (I think the C string) has a little play in it when adjust to pitch, but all of them hold their tuning nice and tightly.

This uke also has a bit of vintage Japanese kitsch appeal: It's labeled "Land O' Lei," and on the paper label it proudly advertises: "Martin Style." As if Martin made a pineapple, LOL.

Strung with brand-new Aquila Nylguts. No case.

This is a sweet addition to your soprano collection.

Thanks.

Pardon my ignorance but is this solid mahogany or laminate?
