What Ukulele was John King playing?

Take a look at the black and white "In Memoriam" photo of John King that is displayed on Ukulele Hall of Fame website. What uke is he playing?

I think the bobble on the headstock is added on to support the strap he is using. That head stock is unusual. Is it a modern uke or an antique?

Compare it to this one. It is not the same but similar.

The heads do look the same.

I believe this is the machete that Dave Means (Glyph) built for John. It is an exact replica of a mid-1800s instrument John owned. I have held this instrument and it is a marvel.

It says: "The Stradelele is currently played by classical ukulele master, John King."

The one in that black & white picture does appear to be either the Glyph replica or the original Nunes model. He did own a Stadelele as well as a DaSilva Santo reproduction soprano. I'm sure he had many other ukes as well.

I agree, it looks like the Glyph Nunes reproduction. The light colored wood, the strap attachment etc. all the same.

This helps me in knowing a little more about my own uke.

Mine is a P'mico. In light of this information, I would guess that P'mico was creating a copy of a Nunes, or at least copying the Nunes styling.

Is a machete the same size as a soprano? Maybe it is just the angle of the photo, but it looks so small in his big hands.
