View Full Version : John S. Kinnard is building my new Concert (Sinker Redwood/Cocobolo)

Over the past couple of years, I have done a lot of research to figure out which custom builders appeal most to me. John S. Kinnard was one of them, and he has just started building my new Ukulele. My idea for it was that of a contemporary tenor, but in the concert size. It will have a Cocobolo body and a Sinker Redwood top with Series 3 appointments, Maple binding, Abalone rosette, a slotted headstock and a side sound port.

Kevin from KinnardUkes has been eager to keep me updated with pictures, so I thought I'd share some of them with you.

Bending of the sides:
91484

Sinker Redwood top with blue Paua Abalone rosette:
91485

Cocobolo back:
91486

The box is closed:
91487

It was my request for a dark, brownish piece of Cocobolo to match the Sinker Redwood top:

The side sound port has been installed:
91493 91497

I think the light color of Maple is framing the dark body beautifully:

Thanks Kanya, Stan, and cml. Yes, it was the pictures and sound samples at HMS that brought Mr Kinnard's work to my attention, along with several positive threads on this forum.

That is one of the most beautiful sinker redwood tops I have ever seen. I love cocobolo and flamed maple bindings and a sound port and the rosette and the...........yep it's fabulous.

Thanks Mark, I know your Tenor Guitar turned out great. That was one of the reasons which made me want to try Kinnard.

Sorry Dave, I didn't mean this to be a secret, but it all happened so quickly once the build started! Basically within the last week.

I'm surprised it's a concert! :)

You mean because I tend to prefer the bigger sizes? My idea with this one was to have something "like" a tenor, but smaller.

John is building a Series 3 baritone for me that starts in the next week. So our ukes will overlap in the shop, which is pretty cool.

Nice Eddie, looking forward to seeing yours being built! If I remember correctly, you were also expecting a uke from Beau Hannam that was overlapping with my wife's...?

Yes, it was supposed to. However, I seem to be forever 6-7 ukes out in that queue. ;-)

Have you asked for John to put PEGHEDS tuners on it? They are the lightest geared tuner, so it does not become heavy toward the headstock/peghead. If they are rubbed with OOOO steel wool and buffed they gleam like the finest black ebony. They have a lifetime waranty from the inventor/make. I really do not like grips out the sides'and PEGHEDS give the look of what were the original shaape and colour

PEGHEDS Make Good Better.

Have you asked for John to put Pegheds tuners on it?

Thanks for the suggestion, I really like the look of those. This uke will have a slotted headstock, though, so no Pegheds. Instead, it will be fitted with Gotoh Stealth Tuners.

These are just the first coats of finish that look a little raw. From what I know, the finish will later be buffed to a perfect flat mirror.

This was quick! The uke is finished, all strung up, and ready to be shipped out. I think it turned out beautifully, just the way I was hoping. I love how the dark color of the body is framed by the light binding. Again, the body is Cocobolo, the top is Sinker Redwood, the binding is Curly Maple, the neck is made from Mahogany, and the fretboard and bridge are made out of Ebony. I really like the look of a string through bridge. I have that design on my Webber and my Ono. Stringing is not as easy if you are constantly swapping strings all the time but it is not that difficult either.

Yes, I have a string through bridge on my Romero XS. Changing a single string is a bit more difficult like that, but no big deal. It's definitely more stable this way, and probably helps transferring the vibrations onto the soundboard.
