My custom tenor from Josh Rieck is underway. So, thought I'd post some pics from Josh about the build. As the title indicates the top is Carpathian spruce and the body is AAAA koa. Ebony was selected for the pin-bridge and radiused fretboard. Fretboard, top, and back are to be bound in curly koa. It will have Waverly tuners and a side sound port. Going with EVO fretwire and W/B purfling.

Here's the first two pics, a gorgeous koa back and a cool rosette made from the same back wood. You might have seen the back in an earlier post about wood selection. But, the rosette pic is new.

Wow, the rosette with the Carpathian Spruce looks fantastic. I'm sure when finished the AAAA Koa will make this a special looking and sounding ukulele. I'd love to hear the Carpathian Spruce sound sample down the road as I'm so into spruce tops. Congratulations Hodge.

Oh, I am so looking forward to updates on this build. Gonna be sublime. I was interested in the "Carpathian" spruce. I had the pleasure of wandering the Carpathians a few years back fairly extensively. Wish I'd thought to harvest some nice wood, not that I could have gotten it through customs...

here is my Lfdm on the left with a Carpathian Spruce top and Bastogne Walnut back and sides....
Andreas is using a thumb pick so it sounds brighter than when I play with the pads of my finger.....very clear mids and highs but nice deep tones too(Thanks Luis) I think Carpathian is my favorite Spruce.....

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Regarding the wood selection, Josh asked me what type of music I played, how I played, and what were my tone/sound preferences. Based on all that, he recommended a Carpathian spruce and koa combination.
So, that's where it started.

New pictures of the sides, top and back. The bracing and structural details of construction show a lot of thought and experience into the design. Looks like the top bracing is composed primarily of spruce, with some mahogany and rosewood at key locations. Very interesting. I'm guessing the asymmetry of the design helps bring out the bass.

Oh what a gorgeous instrument this will be! The rosette and koa are to-die-for. And I would love to know the secrets behind the different woods in the bracing.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I have high expectations for this tenor. There's no target finish date, but I'd guess it will be ready by mid to late August. Josh has been great about sending photos. Will definitely do a NUD for this one. :)

I love, love, love photos of the build process. It is always interesting to see the bracing pattern. The piece of ebony (I think it is ebony) just looks so cool where the two braces cross. It shows just how much thought, care and love has gone into the building of your ukulele.

It's been a while since I had some new info or pictures to update this thread. Josh moved his shop this summer which put builds on hold for a while. But Josh is now is back to working in his new shop.
Just had an update. Received neck pictures.

I was thinking originally of going with a curly maple neck, unless mahogany would be better choice. Well, Josh pointed out mahogany is lighter and has a better color match to the Koa/Spruce combination. So, a mahogany neck it is. I selected EVO fretwire (gold) and Waverly gold tuners, which should look and work great on this uke.

The tenor is finished and should arrive Thursday (Oct 20). Yeah!

This is the latest picture Josh posted on FB. Sorry about the quality, but that's the only new pic of the uke in the last month I have seen.
By the composition of the picture, I'm assuming Josh may better pictures (as will I ) very soon. :)

That's a very interesting bracing pattern. That x style looks very similar to the Martin style x bracing for their steel string acoustics. Do you have any more info on his bracing design?

I only have the pictures of the x-bracing, no other info. I've also seen x-bracing on Pegasus and Toda ukes.

Well, my koa & Carpathian spruce tenor by J. Rieck arrived today, and it is awesome. Nothing I would have changed on this uke. The lush sound is matched by its superb workmanship and gorgeous looks. The tone and volume are amazing. Here it is.

What a stunner, Hodge!! Another find addition to your collection.

Josh might have my Rieck (torrefied spruce top/sapele body) completed in about three weeks and seeing yours has me crossing all fingers and toes that he does! ;-)

Beautiful ukulele and amazing clarity of the notes. Finger picked or strummed this is a winner and exceptionally musical tone. Congrats on a truly exceptional ukulele. it would be nice to hear it tuned in high g if you ever string it that way. Spruce with Koa is a winner. I had never heard a Carpathian spruce top ukulele. I like it!

I've had this Josh Rieck tenor a little more than two weeks and it continues to impress me. It's as fine an instrument as I own or have played.

Recently changed to C tuning with the Oasis Warm low g strings. It even sounds more terrific. The resonance and harmonics are about the best I have heard. It's just what I wanted it to be, a great picker and strummer.
