Another completed tenor...

Highly curly koa always looks stunning but offers the most variables when it comes to sound. Fortunately this one didn't have that usual constipated voice trying to get out that is the disappointment that often accompanies highly figured wood.

This of course is the stuff of experience - you have to make the top thinner and the bracing to have less mass to get these highly figured instruments to work. This work is much more suited to a custom shop where the experienced builder can control such things.

You've mentioned Der Jung tuners a couple of times with recent instruments. Are they your standard tuners and, if so, could you pls advise why you selected them over better known brands?

For open gear side tuners most American builders will use Grover or the more expensive adjustable height Gotohs. Der Jung are much better made than the Grover and less so than the Gotoh. The Der Jung sealed tuners in black with zebrine tuners are our alternative to these. Again, really well made and good looking. It goes without saying that not everything manufactured in China is sub-standard. We also use their planetary tuners as an alternative to Gotoh. Just as good, not so refined but, as with the others, a third of the price....
