Hi!

There are some rare songs that really stay with you. Which you really enjoy playing over and over. For example, mine is probably "Always With Me" by Youmi Kimura, adapted by Corey Fujimoto and transcribed by Bertrand Le Nistour:

I discovered it when I had just started playing the ukulele, so it was way beyond my skill level. But I stuck with it and managed to learn it in the end. It was rewarding as hell! :D

So I'm trying to find more songs like that. Which would your absolute favorite be?

(You can name several if you want to. I've already gone through most of the fingerpicking tab sites)

All of the instruments are low-G, even though the tuning isn't "uke traditional."

There are favorites, depending on the mood. When I first pick up an instrument, a tune just seems to immediately happen as a mood-continuum or warm-up. Can't explain it other that it's a "then moment" thing. The three tunes that seem to happen the most as first-up are:

1. Toes (Zac Brown Band)
2. Hotel California (Eagles)
3. Come Monday (Jimmy Buffett)

Also, if there"s one that I've been working recently to get right, that also occurs as a first-up. Lately, that's been "High On You" (Survivor).

Great topic! Keep it coming, as I've got a low-G coming!

And I'm happy to know I'm not the only Survivor fan... flashback city!

If you like the HMS stuff, you will enjoy Daniel Ho, especially his Polani CD and book. Beautiful arrangements that sing with low g. The book has been what's I've been playing and focusing on for the past year.

Mine would be from my younger years - like 'House Of The Rising Sun' - 'Wonderful World' - 'Summertime' - 'Midnight In Moscow' - 'Edelweiss' - that sort of thing. :)

Great replies so far! :)

Do you also have tabs for some of you favorites?

My two favorites also have tabs available on theukulelereview.com:
Chet Atkins "Can't Say Goodbye"
Chet Atkins "Smokey Mountain Lullaby"
I think they're both great, but I particularly like the latter. To me, Corey's playing in the video is breathtaking.

PS: the arrangement of "Smokey Mountain Lullaby" mentioned above is high-G, but it works great with low-G, too with a few easy edits.

+1 for Daniel Ho's Polani book and CD. I recently got it, and agree that the arrangements are beautiful. They're meant for low G, and are soooo enjoyable to play.

You might also try Daniel Ho's Pineapple Mango. That's a fun one.

You can buy Daniel Ho's Polani tabs, (well worth the price, IMO), but here are some other low G tabs:

Not all of Chief's tabs are low G, but you'll find some good ones there.

So far it's the Irish tune "Foggy Dew".

Another vote for Can't Say Goodbye. Here is Corey playing it: https://vimeo.com/75077757

This song made me buy my KoAloha tenor. I had been choosing my next ukulele for about two months, hadn't even considered KoAloha (I didn't like the looks) and was absolutely set on getting a Kamaka concert. Then I woke up one morning and happened so see this clip: https://vimeo.com/74564918 I ordered the KoAloha tenor (!) rightaway! :D

I extremely happy with it! I think it's because I went with my gut.

Another vote for a number of songs on Daniel Ho's Polani CD and book. Just lovely, and great to have the CD so you can hear how it should be played, although hard to make it sound as nice as Daniel does.

And also Cant Say Goodbye, Always With You are definitely good ones.

Also, I wish I could play Herb Ohta Jr's Sand Castles, or Olinda Road by Hapa, but saw Brad Bordessa play a version on a uke with guitar accompaniment and really liked the song. So, those are 2 other nice songs for Low G.
