Que pasa? John here with a contest fo yo asses. The premise is simple:

Cover a song originally released in the current decade, from 1/1/2000 until present day, on the ukulele. All skill levels are more than welcome to enter this contest! Post a video of your cover on youtube and put the link in this thread. No videos posted prior to the posting of this topic will be considered. So, I'd like you to say "This is for John's Go 2000's contest" or something at the beginning. I can be flexible on saying that though.

The deadline for entries is 5/31/09 11:59:59pm. I will select the winner and wherever you are in the world, I will ship it to you. No max on number of entries per person.

I had a Mitchell MU-70 as my first ukulele. My impressions were that it was beautiful, but didn't sound very full. Very brittle sound. Decided to change the stock GHS strings, and upon removing the strings, the nut fell out. Long story short, I've been bugging my friend who works there, and the new manager said he'd swap it back. Well as you may know, I now have the love of my life, a Mainland tenor. Having more than one uke would be great, but I love UU, so it's contest time.

I have already switched the stock strings to Aquilas, But I supposed I could include the crappy GHS's it came with? It no longer sounds brittle with Aquilas. It sings! And it's a fine looking uke too...

My impressions were that it was beautiful, but didn't sound very full.

i played my friends mu70 with the original strings and not a very pretty sound. after he got the aquilas (my suggestion), it sounded amazing.

ps. i just got a mainland and that is what i am going to make my entry with.

As my first entry, I have chosen a fresh new release from a singer/songwriter that really should be making wads of cash from his original songs.

Hey John

I realised I'd been a bit dim and short-sighted with my entry, seeing that no-one outside of the UK knew it! Oooops.

So I looked on the Billboard Top 100 website and picked something that charted in the US so hopefully you might have heard of this one. :D

As much for my own entertainment as anything else I decided to do a cover of

Metallica's All Nightmare Long (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdHVAKRoCtw)

I actually only learned this song to annoy one of my friends who's a big metal fan, but since it was only released last year I figured I might as well make a quick video for this contest.

Plus I saw John did a metallica cover for the Baron's contest so thought he might get a kick out of this one ;)

Here's my entry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCNzga1YI0E)- last minute as always. None of my original choices seemed to work so, inspired by DJ Danger Mouse's excellent Grey Album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3VVykEt37c), I decided to try and mix the uke-favourite, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Jay-Z's "What More can I say" from his Black Album. Perhaps overly ambitious for a Sunday afternoon and as a result I have wasted the first weekend of summer sitting in front of a computer. The timing was difficult and it shows in a few places. All Ukulele with a little assistance from the Amp Simulator effect on my old Yamaha MU10 and Jay-Z.

More hours of Audacity pain, and a supplementary video.

Thank you for those kind words but all credit must really go to DJ Danger Mouse for his inspirational Grey Album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grey_Album) (if you haven't heard it, it's worth tracking down a copy), to Jay-Z for releasing the a capella version of the Black Album, to Jake Shimabukuro for making "...Gently Weeps" the uke-classic it has become and last but by no means least, to the Beatles.

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER

First.. I'm so sorry for not updating the thread. My life has been a busy mess these last few weeks.

I have watched every video and holy cow, this has been an awesome contest. I expected 5-6 entries, but got a million! I really want to do a video results thing, but I am so freaking busy. I'll still try. Sorry for these anticlimactic results.

It eventually came down to 2 videos. UkuleleJJ's "Next Year" by Foo Fighters, and the Gently Weeps Jay Z mash up by Greeno.

Greeno's entry was the most original. What a crazy idea.. but perfectly executed, to make such an awesome song. It was so incredible. I wish I had two ukuleles to give away.

But the winner is UkuleleJJ's video. It sounded like it was recorded in a studio with pro studio musicians and pro vocalist. Plus, it is one of my fav songs by one my fav bands. I'll be watching it over and over again for years.

JJ, pm me with your full address and I'll send the Uke in a gig bag.

Thanks so much for entering my contest everyone. So many entries that I want to recognize.. kangatheroo.. Casetone.. Goteamyam.. Beeejums.. but really everyone did an amazing job.

Congrats. Excellent version, a worthy winner. :D

Looks like I got my dates mixed up on this one. Had a couple of songs I was working on. But on the bright side, they wouldn't have won anyway!
