Bought a new Kala a couple of months ago. It was setup and plays fine. One small issue, when I try to tune the E string, it seems to be stuck in the nut and won’t slide easily. If I give it a half turn, then it pops and it’s tuned to high? Does it need a small drop of light oil so it slides through the nut? The uke is a slot head.

You can use pencil lead to lubricate the nut slot. I would not use oil.

Also, sounds like the nut slot needs to be slightly widened with a small file. Just a little filing should do the trick, and be careful not to deepen the slot!

This. Just run the tip of a standard graphite pencil up and down the slot a couple of times. This alone might do the trick, without ever needing to get the files out :)
