I recently viewed a youtube video of Herb Ohta Jr. and Ohta-San playing Hi'ilawe. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bd82d5pbKJo&feature=related)

At several times throughout the video, Jr. does these muted melodic runs that have a dampened texture to them. Any ideas on how he accomplishes this?

You put your right hand palm so it is slightly touching the strings at the bridge, just enough to dampen the sound but not kill the sound altogether, and pick the strings.
