He may just not like additional clutter if he's moving to a small place and doesn't really play the uke. 
Looking around my apartment, I understand not wanting to waste space with things that I no longer have a use for. But I'm pretty minimalist, at least as far as my mindset goes ... just fully living it is a slow progress, especially with ukuleles.
