I've always enjoyed King Benny Nawahi's "Queen of the South Sea Isles,", a cool blast from island ukulele history.

But I've always wondered what this line means:

"And when she plays belulah, they do the hula..."

What is belula? or is it "Belulah"? A name?

Thanks to all the Hawaiian experts.

It's a mystery to me too, but my guess is that it's a "nonsense" rhyme, which was not unheard of in hapa haole lyrics. There is no consoonant "B" in the Hawaiian language, so I'm pretty confident that it's not Hawaiian. Curious to see what others know about this!
