Better to go with a thin black plastic material.
PIckguards don't affect the tone if properly thin and on a uke, if they are contained above the lower transverse brace .

I've used thin wood pickguards on several instruments. No more than 1.5mm thick and kept in the upper bout to 1/2 way to the lower transverse brace. No affect on the sound at all.
