Make the drive to Santa Cruz (worth it) and go to Sylvan Music.

And Rick Turner - Compass Rose Ukes - is also in Santa Cruz. Sylvan and Gryphon usually have Compass Rose Ukes in stock.
(I don't own a Compass Rose, but I've played several - including Rick's Personal Koa uke - and they are sublime.)

Try Aloha Warehouse in San Francisco. They carry really good ukuleles and they have a luthier do a setup on them which I think is a huge plus.

Iriguchi Ukuleles are in the area as well. I believe they are in Carmichael. I've emailed back and forth with David Iriguchi a few years back. I know at one time he made them in his home, not sure if that's still the case. He has a website, some very interesting designs.
