I'm flying into Oakland next week for a business trip. 2 days in the San Jose/San Mateo area. Any must see Uke places or music shops in the area?

Yep, you are in ukulele heaven.

Ukulele Source in San Jose.

Gryphon in Palo Alto.

Make the drive to Santa Cruz (worth it) and go to Sylvan Music.

Reach out to Peter Hurney of Pohaku and see if you can visit him in Berkeley.

+1 what Rich said.

If you want to sample some Hawaii food and entertainment, go to the Hukilau in San Jose. Here is the link: http://www.dahukilau.com/sanjose/home

If you are into custom builds, visit Mike DaSilva's shop in Berkeley. Call him for an appointment.

If you're going to Santa Cruz, give Tony Graziano a call. He is one of my favorite builders.http://www.grazianoukuleles.com.

Tip: leave your wallet at home, otherwise you'll be $3K poorer before you leave their shops, unless you can resist the temptation.:)

Blackbird is in San Francisco. Joe the owner will be happy to give you a tour of the factory. Just have to give him advance notice. His email address is on their website: https://www.blackbirdguitar.com

And Rick Turner - Compass Rose Ukes - is also in Santa Cruz. Sylvan and Gryphon usually have Compass Rose Ukes in stock.

(I don't own a Compass Rose, but I've played several - including Rick's Personal Koa uke - and they are sublime.)

And Ukulele Source is wonderful. If you go, tell Janet and Smiley I said hello. (I got my KoAloha Sceptre from them.)

Iriguchi Ukuleles are in the area as well. I believe they are in Carmichael. I've emailed back and forth with David Iriguchi a few years back. I know at one time he made them in his home, not sure if that's still the case. He has a website, some very interesting designs.

I had time for Ukulele Source, what an amazing store and people. And such a cool area of town. I said hello for all you folks that recommended the place.

Iriguchi Ukes

I met them at the Reno Uke Fest last weekend. They were so nice. His Ukulele are simply amazing. Loved the unique, simple approach and the sound he coaxes out of that wood.
