I've compiled a partial list of builders (in no particular order) for those interested in a high end or custom instrument. If you're looking for a Hawaiian built instrument, I haven't included a number of the builders in the 808 which will probably be another list.

There's a builder in Eugene, Oregon - Spruce House...haven't seen or played his stuff, but like his website and philosophy of reluctance to add bling that won't help the tone...

Could you possibly add me to the list. I am not a trained luthier. Have only built around 150 instruments over the past 4 years. Self taught, and use unorthodox building techniques, mostly stick to cigar box instruments, or pimping up cheap ukes. I do not have a website, but am now a member of this forum? Just recently posted some of my recent work in an album on my page here, also I'm not too familiar with how the UU works, so forgive me if I broke protocol with this message. :music:

I guess a custom builder is defined as any person or company that will build a uke specifically to the desired specs of a certain customer. That could be small one man shops or production facilities. I wonder if there are any builders that would not build a custom instrument? That would put ALL uke builders on the list, not counting the asian factories whose instruments sell for less than $500. or so, and couldn't make your dream uke anyway.

Bluke, I don't know if you read this thread (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12854). Maybe it will clarify the term "custom built" ...

Bluke
05-13-2009, 05:52 AM
Thanks, Kanaka. I don't think the term needed clarification, yet it was nice to see luthiers talk about what it's like on the other side of the fence. I've had a few custom guitars built, and the luthiers definitely have a large part in the decision making processes, as they should.

After playing and buying instruments from these custom builders, I think some of us Aussies should get a look in:
Allen McFarlen
Barron River Guitars and Ukuleles ( Cairns, Queensland )
http://www.brguitars.com
Allen is a prolific builder of very high quality instruments. He also runs classes where you walk away with your own Ukes.

Scott Wise
Scott Wise Ukulele (Margaret River, Western Australia)
