Looking at vintage mahogany Martins online, I notice variation in color: some appear dark chocolate brown, others very reddish. Any rhyme or reason there?
They used a dark-colored pore filler that also acts as a stain. That's why the grain appears almost black. I've used a modern version. The more you apply (or the less you wipe off) the darker the wood gets.
