I took my white label (early 70's) Kamaka 'Standard' out of its sleeve last friday, to find that it had developed a 1 inch+ soundboard crack along the grain, from the rim towards the bridge. I was a bit devastated, and quite puzzled, as our humidity level is not an issue (except for being quite high that day), and I couldn't remember having knocked it. My uke had been travelling (train) kangaroowise in the big compartment of my guitar's gigbag. The koa top is very thin, maybe it took a knock, or too much pressure. It will not be the first time this Kamaka will have to go to the doctor, as the glue joints have a history of breaking. Perhaps I'm spoiled by the imperturbability of my Kala Travel Soprano in its modest thinline bag. I might conclude that full size ukes, especiallly the lighter ones, need good casing at all times..

Yes, a good hard case protects my instruments from my clumsiness! Hope your Kamaka gets well soon!
