Hi Mimmo, congrats on your new product.
Can you tell me if the diameter is any different from your Aquila whites and Lavas?

Hi Guys...
Frigilana sorry, I have not well understand your question (my english maybe).
Gauges, tensions etc etc: this new material was discovered one year ago here in Italy ( strange... Lol) and came from the sugar cane. the density is same of Nylgut so the gauges and the tensions are exactly those of the traditional New Nylgut/Supernylgut sets. There are however a few differences: this product is less stretchly than Nylgut. The sound is really incredible I never heard a such kind of sound. Ever. But I say that not because I want to sell a lot of strings (however honestly I hope that); I say that because I am still suprised. Very surprise guys. You can ask here in the forum to those fews that had the chance to try the first samples. Actually I have not understand why this material is so performant having the same density of Nylgut. Normally the rule is: denser the material brighter the sound. Here the density is not those of Fluorocarbon so what the heck happen? Mystery...

Just a question about the new plastic. Will it breakdown to Carbon, Oxygen and Hydrogen over time, or is it like existing plastics which take 100s of years to breakdown completely. maybe this is not know yet?

Or, if you need a sugar fix, can you just lick the strings? ;)

Hi mimmo, well when I received these, I also did not have a Concert to test them out, it's actually been this long before I finally have a Concert Uke.

So now that they are out, I figured I'll just buy a pack, but I will be buying some soon, in fact I'll contact StringsByMail and have them carry these in stock.

I'll keep you posted when I get some...

Here is a link direct to the string maker, no middleman, you can order the strings right now or wait until someone else has them in stock. No doubt the Aquila company sends them on the same aeroplanes to your country that are used by the middlemen, and no doubt the people in your country who do the work of moving the strings around your country and through your postal system still get paid for their fine work.

I've clicked on the link, but don't see them listed in the Shop when you click on Buy Now.

Thanks, EDW. If you click on this link, the Tenor strings (both High G and Low G) have a Read More vs. a Buy Now button. There is no way to add them to the cart. I've created a few websites (Hive Ukuleles, Ono Ukes) and I can say Aquila may make some nice strings, but their site is TERRIBLE. It's like nobody even bothered to check their work.

I ordered 4 sets from the the second link given in this thread on 12/6. They arrived from Italy to New Mexico on 12/18. Pretty good delivery time!
I ordered soprano high g and low G and the same for my concert ukes.
I have not had time to try them yet. In the meantime I sold one of the concerts that I intended to try them on. I play mostly soprano. Don’t give up, maybe try again? I won’t be able to report on sound, etc until after the holiday but I will report back. If I decide not to use the concert strings I will post on the marketplace.

Good day,

It's been a couple of weeks now, so I'm curious if there are any updates on the availability of these strings? I wasn't able to find them today, but I might have missed somewhere.

Sharpshin: Have you had a chance to play yours yet?

I'm very curious about these. I was telling a friend about them and the comment in response was that a bioplastic made from sugar was about the most 'me' thing they'd ever heard of. He he he. :P

Hello Guys,
I am so sorry...the US distribution of the Sugar ukulele is so slow.
I will have some meetings at the NAMM show in Anaheim and I will pick up many samples (bulk and packaged) and two ukuleles of the exactly the same model and even the performance: one will have installed one of the best fluorcarbon set (I do not tell of course which is the brand) and another with our Sugar strings.
Facts are better and louder than words.
Here in Eu they are already available in some places (on line store are better), expecially in UK.
Unfortunately I have no better ways to make things faster.
so be patient still bit.

So, can we buy these strings yet in USA vendors?

-Strings By Mail
-Strings and Beyond
-All Strings Nylon
-Elderly Music
-Amazon
-Uke Republic
-Hawaii Music Supply

None seem to offer them yet.

The distributors must set their clock according to watching cheese ripening or something.

Which of the distributors can we harass for them to bring these strings into the USA market?

Maybe it's time to get the pitchforks and prepare the bonfires. Some distributor is going to have to sacrifice an employee for the totem at the bonfire (like a Burning Man event). LOL.

I ordered two sets directly from Italy. I have fitted a set on my, new to me, Kamaka soprano. I only did this last night as the time change on returning from Hawaii to Vermont has me doing things late at night. The strings are settling in. My initial response has been delight. The sustain is amazing. The strings are lively, though not quite so lively as the set that I removed (probably nylgut) with more mellow character. They seem lighter than what was on before. So far I really like these. Time will tell me more..

The other set that I purchased was a high G tenor set. Since I am unlikely to be changing any tenor strings for quite a while these might be available to swap for something else - PM me if interested.

I agree with friann's comments.

I fitted a set of sugars yesterday on my not-very-expensive soprano, to replace some rather aged nylguts.

My first impression is that the strings are, indeed, more mellow than nylguts , with a rather veiled, richer (but still powerful) sound, which appeals to me. The strings make the instrument sound larger and more serious (if you know what I mean) and less cheeky.

Also, on the packet it claims an "easy vibrato", and it's true.

I was initially disappointed in the roughness of the strings, which made them surprisingly squeaky, especially under the right hand: just before I plucked each note I could hear a little squeak as the string passed over the fingerprint ridges before sounding the note. Lightly oiling the strings did not help, but fortunately rubbing them with candle wax got rid of all the extraneous noise. Phew!

I look forward to hearing others' experiences.

Maybe some vaseline? or OTOH, maybe some talcum powder?

It seems you want to fill the grooves, either on the strings themselves or on your fingertips. Powder will fill the pores on your skin and even out the grooves on your fingertips.

Failing those, maybe a few strokes with some super-fine grit micromesh will make things better?

I don't think using an abrasive would be a good idea as it would be difficult to get a uniform diameter through the length of the string – though I think that's what they must have done with gut strings in the past, probably a craft skill in its own right.

There's obviously an opportunity for a research project here, for someone in materials science. But then we'd need a unit of squeakiness: what about the mouse (or sugarmouse), divided into 1000 millimice or possibly minimice (or is that copyrighted by Disney?)

Enough silliness. Now I've got my sugar strings waxed, I'm really pleased with them. Might try Living Waters next, though.

Quick update, just as i'd come to terms with the tacky nature of the strings the A string snapped between the tuners and bridge now i'll own up to giving them some heavy use with a lot of bending (trying to learn Black Magic Woman) , now prior to trying the Sugar strings i'd been using the D'Addario Titanium with similar heavy use and they seemed bullettproof so i'll be going back to them. But keep up the good work Mimmo.

Just mounted a set of these new strings (tenor) on a HPL Bonanza uke I keep in my office. So far I am quite impressed with the tone, with much more clarity to the sound, almost bell like. And after just one night in place they seem to be staying in tune quite well. They do seem a bit sticky, but I'm sure that will pass. I did notice them binding in the nut slots a bit, which I hadn't seen before using fluorocarbon strings. So I put a small dab of "Nut Sauce" lub in the nut slots and all is well.

Hi

I have Living Waters on my other instruments, and I am really pleased with them. I especially like being able to buy thinner ones for my tenor - standard sets seem ridiculously heavy if you're going to tune up to the same pitch as the much smaller soprano.

Thank you for your kind comments on my blog. It's always good to hear from visitors.
