Hello all,
I’m in California for a couple of days... any recommended shops?

I've been to Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto. Good selection and very friendly. Their website also has all of the instruments that they have for sale and on display, so you can get an idea as to what you'd be able to play while there.

The forum also has a good list of stores if you're up for exploring a bit.

I was also at the Aloha Warehouse recently. Fairly small selection at the time compared to what I remember from a few years back.

Second vote for U-Space at the Japanese American Cultural Center, San Pedro St. and 2nd St. Also, McCabe's on Pico near Bundy in LA west (Santa Monica). https://www1.mccabes.com If you're going to be near Hunting Beach, Island Bazaar is another. http://ukuleleparadise.com.

8 tenor cutaway ukes, 3 acoustic bass ukes, 8 solid body bass ukes, 8 mini electric bass guitars

McCabe’s inventory is pretty limited at the moment. I live a mile away and was just there Friday.

And I was just there today and can attest to this - their current ukulele inventory is primarily Mainland, Cordoba, and Makala. I hear that a shipment of Kamakas is on the way.

In SF, if you happen to be near Japantown there's Aloha Warehouse (http://www.alohawarehouse.com/). In my experience maybe not worth a dedicated trip, but worth stopping in if you're in the area. In SJ, Ukulele Source (http://www.ukulelesource.com/) is worth a stop.

U-Space is the place to go. Ukulele specialty shop. But, call for the hours its open. 1-323-577-5567 Jason Arimoto and his wife Patrice run the place. Great people.

Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Unfortunately I was not able to visit many ukulele shops on my trip. I really wanted to make it over to Gryphon, but I was just too short on time. However, I was able to visit Ukulele Source in Japan town, San Jose. It was a very nice shop with a great inventory... I wanted so badly to walk home with another ukulele, but just can't bear the cost at the moment.

If you're in SF Area, go to LaMorinda Music in Lafayette. This is a big music shop with lots of knowledgeable people to help. Last time I was there they had 75-100 ukes out all sizes.

They're within walking distance of the Lafayette BART station.
