I took a tour of the Thomas Cole House in Catskill, NY yesterday, and I saw this instrument. The body is probably 6" deep, and it dates from the 1800s. There are eight tuners, but it had only six strings. Any idea what it might be? Mandolin?

Looks like a mandolin to me

Well the "tater bug" name means its a bowl back Mandolin. Which it might be I didn't see a bowl back and it wasn't mentioned. If it doesn't have a bowl back then its just an early A Style Mandolin.
