I took a tour of the Thomas Cole House in Catskill, NY yesterday, and I saw this instrument. The body is probably 6" deep, and it dates from the 1800s. There are eight tuners, but it had only six strings. Any idea what it might be? Mandolin?

It looks just like an early "A" style Mandolin.

Bowl-back or "taterbug" mandolin.

Yes, taterbug mando.. Henceforth, this will be the suggestion I give when people want to name an RPG character.

Well the "tater bug" name means its a bowl back Mandolin. Which it might be I didn't see a bowl back and it wasn't mentioned. If it doesn't have a bowl back then its just an early A Style Mandolin.
