I can't remember what uke is in what case, so I made labels for them. I printed on standard name tag blanks, laminated them, and then punched holes in them. I ordered these snap clips from Amazon. They were $7.99 when I ordered them two days ago. If I order more, I'll get a larger size.

I can tell at a glance what ukulele is inside the case, and it's easy to put the labels on and off.

I used luggage tags and put them through the handle hardware. Not as convenient or easy to read as your method. But it works for my needs.

I can only dream of owning so many instruments that I need labels to know this one from that one.

I have a random set of cases..no labels necessary ...whatever is cheap at the time :)

If I get to that point (and am still alive ) I'll use a piece of beige masking tape on the butt end of the case, and write the uke ID on there with a Sharpie.

tsk tsk... everyone knows that the blue masking tape is superior... ;)
