View Full Version : Padauk?

I thought this was padauk, but have not seen the lighter areas before. No hint from the outside that there were light areas inside.

Is it padauk or ???

Thanks - Gary

Very nice. Remember wood is organic and is rarely homogenous in colour, working properties, you name it. Pieces are as individual as us!

Buying wood is a lot like buying fish. Names get slippery and it is caveat emptor for the buyer of wood or fish... This very well could be padauk and if it was bought through a reputable vendor it very probably is padauk. Since this wood is abundant in supply and not on the CITES list or highly regulated, there would be no reason to slip in a fake... I actually find the lighter bands of wood attractive on this piece, but to each his own.

Below is a picture of padauk from the Wood Database.

I've seen Padauk with light areas. What was the sawdust like? It usually makes a bright orange-red mess.

The plank came from my wife's uncle who was a very enthusiastic wood collector. Most of his lumber is labeled but not this one. And yes there is a lot of bright orange saw dust. I would have never questioned whether it was padauk until I resawed it. I like the results also.

Thanks much - Gary

If it's Andaman Paduak it will oxidize to a blood red colour. If it is the African variety it will go a dirty brown. The Andaman is superb but is a devil to grain fill - quite a coarse textured wood.

Hard to say which species it is but is is pretty coarse with large pores. This is for my granddaughter and is my first attempt at luthiery, so I'll fill the grain with shellac and carry on.

The plank underneath the back pieces in the earlier post has oxidized for years and seems pretty red. Time will tell but unlikely I'll be around then.
