Spalted maple is extremely beautiful. The effect comes from the invasion of fungus into the wood. That creates the varied lines and blemishes in the wood when sliced.

The problem is: spalted maple is soft. The fungus creates a weakness that reaches right through a piece. So the wood is laminated.

Fortunately this one has a solid spruce top, which is the most important part for sound. But be aware: spalted wood tops beautiful, but are laminates.

It is beautiful, but now that I am talking to Russ (who Dominic got his cigarbox uke from) I am going to go with him, and (have him) make one of my own.
