When your drum sander doesn't work you're pretty much out of business. So I pretty much freaked out yesterday when I attempted to sand some wood and the machine was quiet. I checked the obvious things like the starter capacitor and the breaker but they were fine. Having nothing to lose I took the motor apart and discovered there's a centrifugal switch in it (right side of the photo) and in my case the contact points were badly pitted. A file and some sandpaper cleaned them up nicely and I was back in business. Maybe this post will save you some angst the next time a motor stops working. I've had the sander for 15 years and this is the first major breakdown. Not bad!

Cheaper than a new motor (or sander) for sure - thanks for sharing Chuck.
