I've played these in local shops and thought they were nice for the money. I don't know about sanding the etching from the top - it might make the top too thin?

The top on this instrument is a laminate. If you sand out the etching (I would guess it's deeper than you might think) you'll almost surely go through the top veneer. No way of knowing what the second layer looks like. If you can't live with the looks, I'd recommend not getting this one. That being said, if you don't mind the $100 risk (maybe a 95% risk), it's worth a try.

Hmmm, how about a Terry Mead banjo uke? Not really a traditional banjo uke style - more of a camp style. You just have a floating bridge, but you still get the wood top. Also, not in the same $100 price range but still a good price for a solid hand made instrument.

Thanks for the lead to Terry’s Uke, looks good and $295 for the concert size model.

To me the Eddy Finn interpretation of the camp design is more about style and appearance than substance. I dislike the picture on front and think that no frets on the body and a sound hole higher up the body would allow a proportionally larger drum area (which is what Terry seems to have done). I don’t believe that it would be practical to sand away the etching (not easy to do and far too likely to damage the top layer of the laminate).

I’ve not come across many Camp style Ukes at all, sadly Google searches just don’t show much beside the Gretsch models (the original and the later roots series) - which IMHO look better proportioned than the EF, less show and more go? To me the Camp style is an interesting concept but I wonder how well they play in practice (when any particular model is compared with similar priced instruments).

Thanks for the link, but at three times the price, I'll pass.

I wondered about that, but the design appears to be raised, rather than sunken in. I doubt that sanding would be able to make the entire top look the same. There is some sort of pattern in the surface that makes it look like fabric. If it were half the price, I'd buy one and give it a try. I bet that design kills 50% of their sales. Maybe a sheet of contact paper would improve the looks. :D

Enya makes a camp uke, which Amazon is selling for $86, but Baz commented on the weak sound because of the location of the bridge.

EDIT: I wrote to Eddy and told him to get rid of that ridiculous design. You should be able to buy a plain faced model next week. :)

I actually bought one of these after Barry posted a teaser picture on Facebook. I really like the whimsical moon and stars motif, and it’s an excellent laminate Uke for the money. My in-laws have a cottage at a camp in the Endless Mountains in Pa, so this is now the official “camp Uke” in my arsenal.

FWIW, Eddy Finn also has a version with a Tiki design.

But the Enya was (is?) barry's travel uke. He can take the neck off and put it in his suitcase then bolt it back on when he arrives! With no problems. Because of that he is willing to put up with the lower volume.

I'm not at all sure the reason is because of the bridge location. I've seen many soprano ukes with the bridge just as low that get plenty of volume. I wonder how it stacks up to the Eddie Finn volume wise?

Thanks to ScooterD35, I ordered the Eddy Finn Tiki version. I like the looks more than the Moon version, and it will complement my Flea Tiki. I found it at The Music Store, St. George, UT for $99.95. Shipping was just $2.66.

I bought the EF moon because I liked the design, however I haven't been able to find a bag that will fit the long neck and wide body. Amazon lowered the price by $30 a week after I bought it, but I still like it.

Different strokes for different folks. Enjoy your new use.

This is the bag I bought for the Moon Uke, and it works just fine.

Thanks! I added that to my Wish List. I have a couple of banjo uke gig bags that might take the round Eddy Finn. I got this mandolin hard case for my banjo ukes, but I'm not going spend $50 for a case for a $100 uke.

This is the bag I am looking for, but I haven't been able to find it on Amazon.ca.

Good to know that it will fit from someone that has one.

I had planed on ordering this 28cm (11inch) wide soft case/bag for the Eddy Finn Moon (Body Depth: 2 1/2" Body Length: 10 1/4"), had I gone through w/ buying the actual ukulele.

I did a broader search and found the m-13 as a mandolin bag that was out of stock, so I ordered it anyways. Crossing my fingers and hope it comes soon.
