I've had a good couple of days and evenings in the workshop, preparing some different woods for a pair of builds I'm working on concurrently. I have planed my tonewoods down just enough to remove the saw marks from the mill and my resawing. Next step is the drum sander, which begs the question: how close do you folks usually thin your wood? If you want a final finished thickness of 2mm, how thin do you go on the drum sanding? 2.2mm? 2.5?

If you look up CLA (Centre Line Average in surface finishing) it will tell you how deep the scratches are in the wood depending on what grit size you choose for sanding.. for 180 grit it is 34 microns = .0013" ... for 80 grit it is 8o microns ..80 microns = .0031" (3.1 thousands of an inch)..so 80 grit is what I use for thickness sanding and .003" (0.07mm) is about what i allow for finishing...Hardly owt (anything) really. :)

Depends on the instrument, but usually about 2mm.
