Very nice instruments!

For the frets, it looks like they are wire tied around the neck - are they inset into a groove in the back of the neck?

Can you also make such 'frets' from nylon or fluorocarbon?

They are tied nylon. There is no groove, they're held in place by tension, but movable. Traditionally they would've been tied gut.
