Here's a link concerning Koa Mele Ukuleles dating back to 2009. It may offer some insight.

yup I know this brand, I have a few ukuleles, when I sold them people mistake them for mele brand.

the whole ukulele is made of koa including the neck , fretboard, bridge body and even the inner kerf linings from what I have but yours seems to have a rosewood or ebony.
super rare to find as it is kinda old. they all have that round neck headstock and same bridge pattern. also the body is tapered and so far only found them in sopranos only . maybe theres bigger sizes out there. mystery

Nice looking uke, how does it sound?

Actually it sounds pretty good. The frets were coming up due to the dry climate of Hokkaido but time a playability is actually pretty good. In comparison with the famous fog-1g I have it’s brighter and a little more complex sounding.

These seem to be deals in japan. I have seen them on yahoo auctions for 170.00usd. I got mine for 100.00usd!!!
