This is a subtle honey burst sprayed on maple with a 0.6mm tip.

For the colour, I only used Medium brown concentrated dye from Stewmac, diluted in lacquer thinner.

After spraying the burst, remove the tape, scrape the purflings clean (there is always scraping needed to be down) then spray 1 or 2 DRY coats of nitro over the burst. Then a wet coat. Doing the dry coats stops the burst colour from running or becoming mottled.

The honey really brings out the figure in the maple. But the back is a revelation. I've never really been a fan of sunbursts, but that might have converted me.

RickOlson I was thinking the same thing. Also, the end graft is beautiful

The usual conception of a sunburst is that it is there to cover up wood imperfections but that isn't the case, although some imperfections have certainly been covered up with dark colours.

In my opinion, a true sunburst accentuates all the figure and hides nothing.

A hand rubbed burst is best for this but a similar effect can be had by spraying- as in this honey burst in which the figure looks more intense at the edges which is the only place it has colour on- The figure in the center looks duller, or rather less accentuated.
